Psoriasis
What is Psoriasis?
It is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin condition that is common in Australia. Symptoms are red scaly patches on the skin as well as itching and flaking of the skin.
Normal skin cells completely grow and shed monthly. With psoriasis, skin cells do this every three or four days. But instead of shedding, the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin.
The most common areas affected are:
- Scalp
- Elbows
- Knees
- Neck
- Joints
- Hands & feet
Causes of Psoriasis
Some causes or triggers of psoriasis may include:
- Skin injuries and infections
- Stress
- Cold weather
- Smoking and drinking
- Certain medications
- Hormones
Understanding your personal triggers that cause flare-ups or worsen your psoriasis is essential in managing the condition.
